The End of English Dominance?

image

Something interesting is happening on streaming platforms like Netflix. Anime is being watched in Japanese by people worldwide. Korean dramas, Spanish series, and other foreign-language content are finding global audiences, often without English dubbing. It’s not just a quirky trend; it feels like a deliberate strategy.

If you think about it through Ray Dalio’s lens, this shift makes a lot of sense. Dalio’s framework suggests that as global power moves between nations, cultural influence follows. English has dominated because of the economic and political power of the U.S. and the British Empire. But as other powers like China, South Korea, and Japan rise, their languages and cultures start gaining global significance.

Netflix and other platforms seem to be preparing for a more decentralized world—one where multiple languages and cultures coexist as centers of influence. Promoting original-language content could be their way of aligning with this shift. Here’s how it might be working:

  1. It strengthens local connections. By keeping content in its native language, platforms show respect for the culture and attract regional audiences.
  2. It fosters cultural exchange. Watching shows in different languages opens audiences to new perspectives, making the world feel more interconnected.
  3. It anticipates global shifts. If economic power moves away from the U.S. toward places like China or South Korea, languages from these regions could become more prominent globally.

This might seem subtle now, but it hints at something bigger. If Dalio is right, cultural dominance—including language—tracks the rise and fall of nations. In the future, English may not be as central as it is today, and we could see a world where watching Korean dramas or Japanese anime in their original form becomes the norm.

Platforms like Netflix aren’t just streaming content—they might be helping usher in the next chapter of the world order.
