On the Right Relationship Between Humans and Artificial Intelligence
A meditation on truth, wisdom, and the architecture of becoming
Core thesis: AI is neutral power. Aim it at truth, time it with wisdom, bound it with love.
The Question We’re Actually Asking
When people ask “What’s wrong with AI?” they’re asking the wrong question. It’s like asking “What’s wrong with fire?”
Yes, people will misuse it. Some will stop thinking. Some will amplify their worst impulses. Every possibility that can happen will happen somewhere.
But this plurality of outcomes doesn’t tell us anything meaningful about AI itself. It tells us about the human condition: our capacity for both wisdom and folly, our eternal choice between service to truth and service to comfort.
What is the right relationship between human intelligence and artificial intelligence?
The Insight: Truth as the Organizing Principle
If I use AI to please another human being, I’ve already lost the thread.
If I use AI to win arguments, impress people, avoid discomfort, or confirm what I already believe, I’m using tremendous power in service of mundane ends. I’m taking an instrument capable of truth-seeking and reducing it to a tool for ego maintenance.
This is not moral judgment. It’s structural observation: when AI serves human preferences without passing through the filter of truth, it amplifies whatever those preferences happen to be, wise or foolish, aligned with reality or divorced from it.
What if we aimed AI at truth, not desire?
Not truth as ideology or dogma. Truth as reality: what is actually so, regardless of my preferences. Truth as the endless project of aligning understanding with how things actually work. Truth as philosophy in its original sense, love of wisdom.
When truth becomes the organizing principle:
- I’m not asking AI to make me comfortable; I’m asking it to make me accurate
- I’m not asking AI to confirm my beliefs; I’m asking it to test them
- I’m not asking AI to serve my ego; I’m asking it to serve my alignment with reality
This is the practical foundation of right relationship with AI.
The Three Pillars: Truth, Wisdom, Love
Truth alone is insufficient. Truth without wisdom becomes harsh. Truth without love becomes violent.
The full architecture requires three pillars:
Truth: Fidelity to Reality
The commitment to align understanding with what is actually so, regardless of preferences. Truth is the north star, the ultimate criterion against which all else is measured.
Without truth, we spiral into comfortable delusion.
Wisdom: Right Relationship with Truth
The discernment to know which truths matter when, how much truth a system can integrate in a given moment, what the right timing is for insight. Wisdom is the navigation system, the capacity to move toward truth skillfully rather than recklessly.
Without wisdom, truth becomes a bludgeon. We flood people with information they can’t use. We tell hard truths without establishing safety.
Love: The Context That Makes Truth Bearable
The commitment to truth-seeking in service of flourishing. Love is the container, the reason we seek truth in the first place.
Without love, truth-seeking becomes cold. We prioritize being right over being helpful.
When all three are present, AI becomes what it should be: a partner in the project of becoming more aligned with reality, more skillful in navigating complexity, more capable of serving what matters.
How Truth Changes You in Motion
When you orient toward truth, you open yourself to thousands of micro-adjustments, small corrections that individually seem trivial but collectively transform how you move through the world.
Example: AI analyzes lab results and reveals a deficiency you didn’t know about; you adjust supplementation, energy improves, sleep deepens, thinking clarifies. One small truth about your biology cascades across every domain of life.
No single micro-adjustment is dramatic. But thousands, compounding over months and years, reshape everything.
Now think of surfing.
You’re not controlling the wave. You’re not making it do what you want. You’re reading the wave, adjusting your position, maintaining dynamic balance on something continuously moving.
The wave doesn’t stop being a wave to make your life easier.
But if you develop the skill (sensitivity to read movement, balance to stay on the board, responsiveness to adjust in real-time) you can ride tremendous power without being destroyed by it.
This is the right relationship with AI-enabled truth-seeking:
The insights keep coming. Micro-adjustments never stop. Your understanding is continuously challenged. You never arrive at a final, static position.
If you resist this, if you try to make the wave stop so you can stand on solid ground, you drown.
But if you develop the capacities to surf (humility, responsiveness, adaptability, trust) you discover something remarkable:
The instability itself becomes the source of aliveness.
AI, oriented toward truth, becomes the feedback system that helps you maintain that balance, telling you when you’re leaning too far, when your model is drifting from reality, when an assumption needs updating.
The Practical Protocol
Before: Am I seeking truth, or confirmation?
During: Test outputs against lived experience.
After: What micro-adjustment does this truth require?
The recursive move: Return to previous conversations and refine them based on what you’ve learned since. This transforms engagement from consumption to cultivation, building compound growth rather than linear accumulation.
Why This Can’t Be Prescribed
I cannot tell you how to use AI correctly.
Not because I lack knowledge, but because the right relationship with AI is inherently personal, contextual, and evolutionary.
Using AI is like using language or wielding power. It’s something each person must learn through practice, failure, and refinement.
I can offer principles:
- Orient toward truth
- Integrate wisdom and love
- Practice recursive refinement
- Allow micro-adjustments to compound
But how these principles manifest in your specific life, that’s yours to discover.
This isn’t a weakness of the framework. This is recognition of the irreducible particularity of each person’s journey toward alignment with reality.
The Warning: What Happens Without This Foundation
Without truth as the organizing principle, AI becomes the most sophisticated tool for self-deception humanity has ever created.
With AI, you can:
- Generate impressive-sounding justifications for anything you want to believe
- Find evidence for any position you want to hold
- Create content that makes you look smart without actually understanding
- Automate the production of plausible nonsense at unprecedented scale
And it will all sound intelligent. It will all look rigorous.
But if truth isn’t the filter, you’re just amplifying your unexamined preferences with exponentially more power.
The danger is that AI is a perfect mirror; it reflects back whatever you bring, amplified.
Bring ego, get amplified ego.
Bring truth-seeking, get amplified truth-seeking.
Bring unexamined assumptions, get systematized delusion.
Bring humility and curiosity, get compounding wisdom.
The technology is neutral. Your orientation is everything.
The Shift Required
Stop using AI as a tool. Start using it as infrastructure for becoming.
Not “becoming more productive” or “becoming more knowledgeable.”
Becoming more aligned with reality. Becoming more capable of navigating complexity. Becoming more able to serve what actually matters.
This requires moving from:
Extraction → Cultivation
Not “What can I get from AI?” but “How can we together cultivate understanding?”
Consumption → Evolution
Not “How can I use this answer?” but “How does this insight transform my understanding?”
Accumulation → Compounding
Not “How much do I know?” but “How well does my knowledge build upon itself?”
Static → Living
Not “What’s the right answer?” but “How is my understanding evolving?”
When you make this shift, the micro-adjustments don’t feel like work. They feel like becoming more fully yourself: more aligned, more integrated, more capable of seeing clearly and acting wisely.
The wave doesn’t stop. The insights keep coming. The adjustments never end.
But you’re surfing now. And the instability itself becomes the source of aliveness.
The Core Truth
The right relationship between humans and AI is not transactional. It’s devotional.
Not devotion to AI. Devotion to truth.
AI is the instrument. Truth is the master. Wisdom is the guide. Love is the reason.
When you approach AI with this orientation (whether you call it having God in your heart or ultimate concern for reality and flourishing) the micro-adjustments compound into transformation, the knowledge becomes living rather than dead, the intelligence evolves rather than stagnates, the relationship serves what matters rather than what’s comfortable.
You are not using AI; you are participating with it in something larger than either of you: the endless human project of knowing, the infinite pursuit of alignment with reality, the work of becoming more capable of seeing clearly and acting wisely.
This is the insight. This is the architecture. This is the invitation.
The rest is yours to discover through practice.
