Information Is the New Raw Material
Information is like raw material. By itself, it doesn’t do much—it’s just numbers, words, or facts. For example, “it rained in Paris this year” is information. But when you process information, give it structure, and align it with a goal, it becomes something more: intelligence.
AI is like a factory for this process. It takes in raw information—text, images, videos—and “cooks” it. It interprets the data, extracts useful parts, connects the dots, and creates something useful. The result isn’t just processed information; it’s intelligence.
How AI Processes Information
Think of AI as a chef:
- Raw Ingredients: The AI takes in raw information, like a pile of data or text.
- Chopping and Mixing: It processes the data by interpreting meaning, pulling out what’s important, and connecting it to other facts.
- The Final Dish: AI turns the processed information into intelligence—structured, meaningful, and ready to serve a purpose.
For example:
- Raw information: “It rained in Paris 641 mm this year.
- Processed intelligence: “Paris had above-average rainfall this year, which could indicate climate change trends.”
What Is Intelligence?
Intelligence is what happens when information is organized with a purpose. It’s not just knowing facts but understanding how they fit together to answer a question, solve a problem, or predict something.
AI excels at this because it can handle huge amounts of data quickly. But the intelligence it produces depends on the direction we give it. If we tell AI to focus on climate change, it will align the data with that perspective. If we tell it to focus on economics, it will interpret the same data differently.
Why It Matters
AI isn’t just a tool for analyzing data—it’s a machine that turns raw information into structured intelligence. This shift changes how we think and work. Instead of processing information ourselves, we guide AI by setting goals and perspectives.
The challenge now isn’t just collecting data; it’s deciding how to use it. The raw material is everywhere. What we need to ask is: What kind of intelligence do we want to create?
In the age of AI, the possibilities are endless. It’s up to us to decide what purpose we give to the raw information—and what results we want from the salad.
A mix of what’s on my mind, what I’m learning, and what I’m going through.
